This is actually a question my parents would like me to post. Does anyone have duel citizenship (For us it is Italy and America) and have adopted a child. We are moving in the next year back to Italy, but we are unsure if it will cause problems, and should wait. We are adopting a little girl (Three) from Sicily, near to where we are going to live. If she lives in America for a year with us, do you think that will cause various problems.

(My parents were never able to have a child so they adopted me (Marion, 15), my two sistes (Rosa,9, Lucia,8), and my four brothers (Antionio, 7, Giuseppe, 12, Giovanni, 10, Rinaldo, 13) and it has never been a problem for us.

  1. If you are going to adopt again, I wouldn't tell them that you are planning on moving, which can be detrimental to adopting. Also, it might take several months for her birth certificate to get to you, and she can't get a passport without it, so that could cause problems.

Since she's from Sicily, the move to the USA, then back could be traumatic. She's had a lot of loss already, and this could be really hard on her. Check with an international adoption attorney to make sure you couldn't lose her because of the move back to Italy. Good luck!

  2. Why would living in America cause problems? I don't get your question. If your parents are going to adopt the girl regardless, they should do so as soon as possible to give her more long term stability with your family.

  3. Shouldn't be a problem. They (probably) do need to file/register the adoptions with the American Consulate in Italy, but I'm sure they already know that....
