Question:

My Pomeranian's Fur? ?

I've had my Pomeranian for almost 9 years now. I bought it when it was just only 5 weeks old that we got from a pryvate breeder. For the longest time, my Poemeranian's fur never got to look like the real puffy fur dog that most people are used to seeing. We tried different methods of trying to make it poof out, but it didn't result to anything. My dogs fur is short and combed back looking ya know? I don't know, it's been a long time and I never understood why my dog's fur isn't as poofed out as other pomeranians are.

  1. The undercoat is what makes the poms coat 'Poof".  Apparently you purchased it from a breeder who did not know what they were doing.  If they did you would never had been able to take it home at 5 wks old.  The breeder did not breed for the correct coat.

I am sure that he/she is just wonderful anyway.

  2. are you sure he's purebred? My dog is a Pom-Chihuahua so his fur doesn't poof out like a proper Pom's either.

If you're sure he's pure-bred,try taking him to a groomer who specializes in grooming show dogs, because often there's a special haircut and style for them (I know it sounds ridiculous, but think of show poodles and how they look).

    Hope this helps!

  3. It's most likely because you did not purchase your dog from a breeder who was showing her/his dogs and this conforming to the AKC standard as far as coat type is concerned.  Sure, there are all kinds of interesting techniques to get that fur to poof out and stand up, but if the coat type is not correct to begin with then that's the way it's always going to be.

"Private breeders" are not necessarily breeding to type.  They're just breeding dogs.  I'm sure your pup is absolutely phenomenal in every other way but if the coat isn't to type, then it is what it is.

  4. Your pup was either poorly bred or not purebred.
