Okay I'm doing a paper on my rights. And the thing I'm goning to focus on the most is the school board not alowing the students to ware one of their pant legs up and the other down. They tell us it is because it is a gang symbol. Well ME a 14 year old girl is obiously not in a gang! To me it is a sympol fastion statmate and nothing more. I want to quote parts of the Bill of Rights, but I'm not sure what amendment will go along with my paper. Please just give me some tips on what to say in my paper. THANK YOU!

  1. Sorry that is not a right. Try something else.

  2. The first amendment is what you are thinking of and you want the Kent State armband case.

Unfortunately for you, however, only political speech is truly protected, and dress codes can be required per the Supreme Court.  Unless you find a political reason for waving one calf in the wind, you are likely out of luck.

For example, a girl suing to not follow a dress code because it 'stifled her free expression' was considered not to have her rights infringed upon.  However, a kid wearing a shirt with a picture of George Bush with a middle finger extended hand gesture superimposed was determined to be protected.  The court said the profanity itself could be prohibited but not the political statement.

    Good luck, though.

  3. THAT is an old gang symbol and a new gang symbol. schools are allowed to curb some students "rights" you are under-age
