Question:

My Russian surnames?

I've been curious to know the meanings of the surnames of my old Russian ancestors, I don't know if I'm spelling them right...

Levintov

Melnikov

Kaminkovich?(not sure on the spelling)

If anyone speaks Russian or something that'd be great if I could get an idea of where I'm coming from. Thanks

  1. I'm not sure these are right, and I'm not that great at Russian surnames.

The first one, Levintov, has no apparent meaning, although it sounds like the Russian name "Lёва" (Lyova; Leonid, Leo).

Melnikov, comes from the word "мельница" (melnica), which means windmill. Melnikov, then means somebody who works with windmills.

With Kaminkovich, I can only think of "камин" (kamin), which means fireplace.
