Question:

My Sabaru's engine dies suddenly...while car is being driven?

Hello, I have a '91 Sabaru Legacy. It's a great little car and it seems to run great, except the engine dies suddenly while I'm driving. I can be going 50 MPH or just crossing the parking lot. I changed the fuel filter, but that hasn't fixed it. It starts right up and runs smooth as silk, but suddenly while driving, it's as if I had turned the ignition switch off. Then, the dashboard lights up, just like it does when I turn the key on in the morning. This is a completely new problem -- as it has run trouble-free for 2 years, ever since I bought it used.

BTW, it usually starts right up again.

Please help! Thanks!

  1. if its stickshift could be neutral safety switch

  2. change your oil every 5.000 kms and change your timing belt on your subaru if you have over 100.000 kms subaru is a good car.. i have one too, other then that, that is all i know

  3. hey there

my partner knows alot about cars and he has a

feeling it is more then likely the computers

but your best way to find that out for sure is to take it to

    a Sabarus specialist

but he and my brother and both sure its the computers

  4. omg. my parents have the same exact car and when we got back form our weeklong vacation, it wouldnt start up. the engine was dead. we had to get it jumpstarted. idk.

  5. dies does it start right back up.... id say its something to do with fuel.. but if you have to wait then check the coil

  6. Your battery is low. Change it

  7. It's definitely electrical. It could be your ignition switch possibly. Do you have more than 5 or 6 keys hanging on your ignition key ring? Too many keys can damage the switch over time. You probably have a bad igniter in the ignition circuit. Very hard to troubleshoot sometimes, A mechanic will apply heat with a heat gun to it, or tap it gently. Any good mechanic will know what to check, but it's tricky unless the component just fails. Someone who specializes in Subaru might have a better chance of figuring it out. This is a very dangerous condition.

  8. sounds like a electrical short or most likely a loose connection. with engine running open hood and wiggle battery connections locate and wiggle wire harness to computer and fuse box even check for loose fuse and relays also try to note if this happens when bumps or rough pavement is present.
