Question:

My Sister is Killing Herself with Anorexia and Doesn't want Help...What can my family do?

My sister is anorexic, depressed, and hates herself. She often talks about killing herself and how the world would be better without her. She is 5'7" and weighs less than 80lbs. She is 22, so my parents cannot commit her to a hospital because she is an adult. She is very smart (book smart), so she does a lot of work abroad. By doing this, she just doesn't eat when she is overseas living by herself. No one can stop her because she is an adult and can do what she wants. I have begged her to get help, so has my whole family. SHe is just shutting people out and refuses help. I don't know what to do...I am scared she will die. Is there anyway to get an adult help for an eating disorder if they are not mentally stable? Thanks for your responses!

  1. Your sister has a disease, google anorexia, try 2 get her help. even take her 2 one of there meetings, so she can see that she has a deadly disease if she doesn't get help soon, maybe if you get pictures of persons that have died from anorexia, and maybe even a trip 2 the morge, and let her see 1st hand what it is really like!

  2. well don't press her, that'll push her further away. Pray first, then slowly ease your way in with small talk and try to get the source of her problem. she may have an underlying issue that is causing this. how was her childhood? just try to get her to open up to you without pressuring her. and talk her out of overseas work because that's just an attempt to get away from her problems rather than solving them. good luck.

  3. sorry about your sisters illness and the stress int he family

if your parents have proof of your sisters threats of killing herself and being anorexic then yes they can commit her into a hospital to get her help..

your parents can petition the court for a court order for your sisters involuntary admittance into a hospital to get the help she needs

    this will give more information...

good luck and hope all turns out well..
