Question:

My Social Work program at my college is less than enthusiastic about my achievements, goals etc...?

I'm going to volunteer for a NAMI group a little bit a week. Would this count for anything with my Social Work degree? I've contacted all offices at my school who would like to listen, maybe they will respond, maybe not.

I'd eventually like to be an alcohol counselor, or work with the homeless. I'm going for a B.S. and have 66 credit hours, but my dream would be to have a Master of Social Work.

Can you give me any advice, since I seem to be nothing but a burden to my Social Work dept? I pick up negative vibes their. It's like they scream "I hate my job, leave me alone" silently. Thank you

  1. Volunteering for NAMI is a great addition to the classes you are currently taking for your BSW. For my BSW we had to spend a certain amount of hours volunteering in the local community. This may also be true at your school and help you towards your degree. However, some programs may not require volunteer hours.

Even if it doesn't help you obtain your social work degree, it will help you get some experience in the field. Internships and volunteering are a great way to get your foot in the door with local agencies. They see how great of a worker you are and that you took the time to help the community.

I also did some volunteering at a local mental health center and it has helped me greatly in my career. I understand more about mental illnesses than some other workers in my agency. It also helped with some of the answers on the social work licensing test. Maybe you could do an internship/volunteer in an addictions agency and a homeless shelter too. The more experience you have, the better.

    Good Luck!
