He does not want to wear pull ups. We had a crying fest this morning trying to put him in pull ups. He said no I want diaper! I am going to get him big boys underwear tomorrow and start on those. Any advice?

  1. I'm sure others will disagree, but there is definitely evidence that pushing too hard can be traumatic and counter-productive.

And please be careful not to shame him!

(there, my inner sympathetic is appeased)

My 3-year old is having a hard time as well, but it's just a challenge. Keep trying different approaches, like putting a child-sized toilet in different places, or using rewards, or simply letting him run around naked and asking him every 20 minutes.

  2. At 3 yrs of age he is ready to be potty trained...for boys the transition can be a little harder but he will get the hang of it...just think of the money you will be saving not buying diapers!  I would recommend letting him run around the house bare naked for a couple days-this seems to work the best for teaching the child to not wet himself.  Make sure to take him to the restroom every 15-30 minutes.  Place a Cheerio or other round cereal in the toilet and have him aim at the cereal...boys think this if fun.  After he uses the toilet offer him a small reward-M & M or gummy bears work great!  I know it sounds like a lot of work but it will work. Then introduce the underwear and do the same routine as before.  He should be potty trained in a week...of course expect some accidents along the way.  I would highly suggest Huggies Night Time Pull Ups for bedtime though until he starts to wake up dry.  Good Luck!

  3. maybe try and tell him that the pullups are the new cool diapers that everyone wears? that the the actual diapers are old, and people will laugh if he wears them?

  4. You could do something similar to what Super Nanny did on a show to rid a child of their "passy". She told the child that there are babies that need it and that he has to give them up so that babies that need it, can use it. Super Nanny had the child put their passy in the mailbox for a fairy to come and bring it to a baby. The next day, the child went to the mailbox and there were colored feathers all over (to make it look like there was a fairy there) and a prize for the child for being a big boy. I think the idea is great. Maybe you can work this out to work for him.

  5. Is he toilet trained? If not, stay with diaper or pull-ups, whichever are more comfortable for him.

If he is toilet trained, get him into "big boy" underwear.
