Question:

My Spin is getting worse?

I keep trying to do a onefoot spin and every time I practice it seems like it's getting worse. Can you give me some tips on each step. The steps are 3-turn back crossovers (2 or 3) and step into the spin. My two foot spin is fine.

  1. Until you get comfortable with the step into the spin, maybe skip the back crossovers for now.  Practice your spin from a line.  Stand facing the line and imagine a "half a heart" shape....pretend the hockey line is going down the center of a heart shape on the ice.....you want your entrace to look like that.  I even draw this shape on the ice for my skaters to follow.  Push off on a left outside edge (bottom pointy part of heart), arms out left knee with a deep bend, right leg behind you.  Think push, hold, stand up.  To stand up, the right leg *snaps* from behind you to straight out infront of you (about knee high), your arms are still out and haven't really moved, but are kept strong.  At the same time, raise up on your left knee slowly....don't snap the knee straight, or you'll end up too far up on your toe.  You'll notice that the snap brings you around and back next to the line you started from, creating the top "curl" of the heart.  During your step, think that you're making yourself "real small" because you want a deep knee bend....at the same time, you're balancing a very heavy book on top of your head and you can't let it fall.  Once you snap the foot in front, make yourself "real tall".....stand up straight and don't drop the book!

Once you've got the step down, adding the crossovers with the back inside edge is a piece of cake.  You do your crossovers, hold the left foot under (this is all assuming you skate righty!), twist your upper body outside of the circle with your arms outside too.  Step into your circle first, bring the arms along and add the same thing you were doing from the line.

    Good luck! :)

  2. Sometimes we have off days and if we let it get to us we back out and thus we lose a move. Just don't practice it for a while and come back to it. Believe me, I've had a day where I just could not spin at all, my body wasn't working for me. But they came back by next practice.

If you have changed your technique at all that might do it, or maybe you didn't tie your laces how you usually do, or maybe your blades are dull. There are so many factors it's sometimes frustrating, but take a breath and stroke a few laps around the rink to recenter yourself.

  3. My skating coach worked on this with me today and it's so much better. After you do your crossovers hold the position and make sure your skating leg is bent. Then when you step into the spin make sure your feet start in a T position with your skating legs bent(be sure your butt isn't sticking out, keep it underneath you). As you're going into your spin you have to be over your skating leg. This will help your BALANCE. If you don't have your balance then... don't even bother spinning because you'll probably get out of control. Oh and have the force of your free leg swing around you naturally don't bring it in right away. As you start spinning make sure your shoulders and hips are at even height and you're not drooping your free leg. First, have your leg in the sloppy T position and press your arms down while you're spinning(It'll help your balance and make you spin faster). Be sure that your leg isn't turned out!!! It has to be parallel down or your body will be uneven. Then when you're ready and balanced, pull in. One more thing, on your blade you have a "sweet spot" it's on the ball of your foot below your toe pick. Spin on that spot!! I know this is a lot but try to do all of this I hope it'll help you.

  4. It might be your skates are not sharp. But if you think it's something you are doing wrong here are some tips. Do your 3-turn then your crossovers (use your arms to get more speed) step then keep your arms out for speed then when you put your skate to your leg pull your arms in.

  5. Its just a faze but...you should keep ur leg high out

  6. im working on the same thing.

try practicing your two foot spin, then practice your one foot spin without the crossovers. that should help you. if not, ask your coach or someone.
