My Stimulus Check went to the wrong address?

6 months ago my son moved out of the house next door and moved to another town for about a month. Well when he changed his address he used mine instead and all of our mail was going to that address. It took me 2 months to get my mail corrected and he doesn't live there anymore. Now I have learned from the IRS that our stimulus check went there. We told the IRS on the phone what our address was and they changed it. But now what will happen to my check? Will they send it back to me?

  1. How did you get a hold of the IRS. I was in the millitary and moved, I know i'm not going to get my check, because I havn't recieved any of my forwarding mail since I moved almost 6 months ago. I tried to contact the IRS, but only get a 100 diffrent rcordings, and a million dead ends. I filed a change of address form, but my check was already mailed acording the the IRS website.

  2. My check was also delivered to my old address, although the letter letting me know when the check would arrive was sent to my new address. The post office in my former town did not return the check to sender (or forward it to me, even though my mail forwarding request is active).  My former roommates received my check and then "lost it", so now I'm trying to get a hold of the IRS to ask them to stop payment and reissue a new check.

I filed my taxes online and made my payment electronically (direct deposit), so I did not even expect to receive a paper check.

  3. If you filed a form 8822 change of address with the IRS, they'll  send your check to you.

  4. The post office will return the check to the IRS as undeliverable. The computer will then reissue the check since there is a new address in the system since the original check was mailed.

  5. the IRS will stop payment on the check sent to the wrong address and re-send a check to your correct address.  Calling in this case is all you need to do to update your address.

If it all possible it is best to to have your IRS Refunds sent directly to your bank or savings account.
