My TV blacks out randomly -- why?

I have an older TV that usually works fine. Sometimes, though, it will suddenly get either completely blacked out, or really white, although you can still kind of see the picture. When you hit it (sometimes it takes a few hits) it will return to normal. Why is this, and is there an easy (or, for that matter, a hard) fix?

The fault will be caused by a dry joint that needs re soldering ! an easy fix for a Tv Tech with a soldering iron !

Its an old TV, there could many factors in the TV. You can get it fixed and it can usually be a minor problem.  You can get it repaired but if the cost is as much as a new TV, get a new TV.
