So my bathroom toilet broke about a year ago. My dad fixed it but now it flushes by itself every 15 minutes. My water bill has doubled and i need to know if anyone has any idea what could be causing this and maybe how to fix it. Don't give answers like "call a plummer" Any Einstein could say that, but i want to learn how to fix it.

  1. Sounds like the Flapper valve is bad.  Turn off the water to your toilet, should be a k**b on the pipe leading into it.  Take the Flapper valve off (no tools needed, it should slide right up overflow tube) - take it to a hardware store and buy a matching replacement.

    Here's a diagram: http://www.ec.gc.ca/water/images/manage/...

  2. I don't have an answer, but WOW!  If nothing else, turn off your main water line at night and wait until morning to turn it on and flush.  I really hope you get your answer.  I feel sure there is someone on Yahoo Answers that does this type of work.  Good luck!

  3. nowdays is not even worth to fix the toilet mechanism. It costs $20 and it does not fit all that well. I have tried this several times in my toilets and then I gave up.

It is better to buy a brand new toilet and replace the whole darn thing. If you want to splurge the extra $$, you will not be disappointed if you buy a High Performance toilet. This has a larger valve, a more powerful flush, and uses less water. The cost is about $180 for both toilet and tank.

    Good luck.

  4. If you have a typical toilet, you can take the top off the tank and look in it. There is usually a hole where the water goes down to the bowl. The hole is covered by a rubber flap that seals on the edges of the hole. When you flush a chain pulls the flap up, and the water goes in the bowl to flush. The problem you probably have is when the toilet is full, the flap is not sealing properly against the hole. If water rushing past the leaky seal is strong enough, it will break the seal of the flap against the hole, making it go higher and higher until all the water goes into the bowl. Then the cycle starts again.

To fix it, you can go to home depot and buy a new flap and seal set. You clean the ceramic edge around the hole (after turning off the water, emptying the tank and drying everything off). You use a silicone sealant to attach the new seal to the ceramic hole, wait about 15 minutes to dry, and attach the new rubber flap. Then you test it a few times, making sure it fills all the way, and you don't hear any leaking sounds when the toilet is full. The kit costs about $7.00.

  5. sound like you have a cracked thingy inside the base.

  6. You have a leak at the flapper (the part that lifts up when you flush). To test this, flush the toilet and when the flapper goes back down, pour in a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) and let it fill. After about 15 minutes, look in the bowl and see if the discolored water is there. Replacing a flapper is easy since it just "clips" onto the overflow tube with two ears. Turn off the water supply under the toilet, flush, disconnect the chain, remove the flapper and take it with you to purchase a new one.
