I got him 4 days ago and he keeps trying to get out of his cage. When he tries he tips himself over.. Will this end? I already take him out 3 times a day to go outside (30 min each)

  1. He's probably just not used to the new environment.

I think he will get settled pretty soon, but if not- you should take him to the experts.

  2. Species, size, and basic cage description would be helpful.

Some common causes of this behavior would include:

    - Cage design. It is easy to design a bad cage. Tortoises patrol the perimeter, and if there is a place it thinks it can get out (like a clear wall), it will try at that spot. A rock, hill, etc. at this spot can make it easy to flip.

    - Small or unsuitable habitat. They will often try harder to get out of a bad habitat so much they will partially climb a wall and fall over in the attempt.

    - Problems in the general cares or high stress. Poor diet, wrong temps, etc. can stress a tortoise, causing unusual behaviors.

By the way- one thing that stresses a tortoise BADLY is being carried and moved a lot! Just take it out once and leave it there as long as it is safe.

  3. cage is to small and not feeding enough..why a tortise in a cage isn't that kinda cruel..

It will not end he wants out.

Do you have a yard where you can get a kiddy pool for him during the day and bring him in at night?

    What kind or turtle?

  4. Free him. He hates being trapped.

You would know that feeling if you end up in jail one day

  5. Maybe he's lonely.

  6. THATS SO FUNNY REMINDS ME OF WHEN I USED TO WORK AT PETLAND HAHHAH HE JUST RE4ALLY ACTIVE THATS ALL.

  7. Tortoise Guru ? right.............

  8. What are the walls of the cage made of. Most tort owners say to keep torts in enclosures they can't see through the walls of, because if they can see, they think they can go and will hurt themselves or wear themselves out trying to escape. But after a day or two in an opaque walled enclosure, they tend to settle down and get about the business of life.

I just "rescued" two torts, and for the first couple hours they marched around the perimeter seeking a way out, but two days later they have settled down.

  9. not suicidal, just wanting a bigger space. buy a bigger cage, and put more stuff inside it.

  10. Haha i like your question " MY TOURTOIS IS SUCIDIAL?!?!?!?! lol that made me laugh.

Other then that lol i cant help ya

  11. He just doesn't like his cage. Is it too small?

  12. maybe u could make him a space in the backyard for him. like how dogs have a "dog run"

  13. Well, was he wildly caught? Animals tend to get very nervous when they're put into an enclosed container if they were wild all their lives. Other than that, he'll eventually except his captive life, and will quit doing that. Also, is there anything tempting ( leaves, flowers, etc.) outside his aquarium that he might be trying to get too? that also might be a factor.

  14. does he have a UV light in his cage otherwize he may be trying to get out because of that. also does he have a heat mat ? and a shelter?

my tortoise used to do that too! once i got the above thinks he stopped. sometimes they do it to move the bark out of the way to find a good place to sleep and they may tip whist attempting this.

ps) i let mine out for around 4 hours a day he is fine at night but he will climb at the cage door in the morning untill he is let out.

  15. it will end eventually if it keeps on doing that

if it keeps coming out of the cage and falling on the floor i can guarantee that it will die...(im sorry to say that) this happend with my other turtle i had. it kept on wanting to escape and it kept climbing out of its cage and soon it was on the floor...dead. i dont know why they want to escape but you should try buying a differnt cage that has a top that you can cover it with...hope that helps!!

  16. Probably not. I had two turtles that I kept outside in a tank on my deck and they would always try to get out. Eventually they both escaped and I never saw them again. sorry : (
