Question:

My Truck battery is dead?

I have a 2001 chevy truck. I have not driven since last thursday. Today the battery is completely dead. Another problem is the hood release would not work. Does it need the battery to release the hood? Are there any other ways to open the hood without the release? Could this be a fuse problem? Thanks!

  1. the battery probably went down sitting around. you say the hood release won,t work? get up under the front and take a long screwdriver and reach up to the hood latch and pop the hood. the cable must be broke or sticking.

  2. Is there damage to the hood? Power is not necessary to open the hood. Have a friend put some pressure on the hood where the release is while you pull the handle. (this assumes the cable is not broken). Your friend should feel the release open and if he/she lifts up on the hood it should be free of the catch. If that doesn't work you will have to access the hood release from the bottom. (not fun, very difficult) and actuate the release mechanism manually. (don't close the hood until you repair it or you will have to do it again) you may possibly be able to see the release mechanism (not the little handle for the safety catch but the actuator for the latch) through the grille. it is possible you may be able to manipulate it through the grille but be careful the grille is plastic and pricey. Good luck

  3. no the battery doesn't control hood release that is a cable. When you pulled the hood release did it move toward you and click? If it did just go give hood a yank up then pull release again and yank again. Probably its just the latch has gotten stiff from lack of use. After you get it open spray some white lithium grease into latch mechanism. Use white lithium because it doesn't attract dirt like regular oils and grease does, also this is what manufacturers use. There are a lot of reasons why batterys die, i'd start by checking out alternator.

If the hood release in cab doesn't want to move cable is stuck in its sheath. If you pull too hard on that plastic handle it could break off so be careful yanking on it. You can try to bypass it by using a long screwdriver thru the grill but you may or maynot be able to access the release mechanism most are built protected so people can't tamper with vehicles engines without getting inside the vehicle to pop hood.
