Or how about agate or other mineral bookends?  My sister actually gave me those for one of my birthdays.  I use them all the time.

Also, consider their specialty.  If they specialize in volcanoes, something made from Mt. St. Helen's ash would likely be appreciated.  My brother, who is a glass blower, used ash collected on a trip and blew a decorative fruit bowl for my relative.  Since you probably don't blow glass, here's a place that does (using Mt. It's pretty likely that they like the outdoors, so you could probably get some sort of camping equipment, or hiking backpack, things like that.  Even a gift card to an outdoors store.  i can't imagine a geologist who doesn't like nature.

Well, you could get them something from their registry - then maybe a small gift that has to do with their professions. But, depending on how long they have known each other, if they are living together, etc. they will probably need things to furnish their home.

what about making them a time capsuel do you think they would apprecaite something like that? get or make a nice chest maybe in grave it or something then put pics from when they were dating favors and stuff from the wedding ect so obviously it would be a work in progress but...or what about looking into getting them a family creast it will detail the familys history as well as LOL the family seal stuff like that

edit i just wanted to add another sentimental idea just coping and pasting another one of my answers here ...

ohhhh even better if your talented or know someone who is my husband made these great tables then he put family pictures all over the top and clear coated them and then something to protect from mostuire but im sure you could just buy a cheap end table even from a tag sale and do the top of it up and im willing to bet even if they have an end table if you make something special like that their going to use it
