Some of the traps are black. Does that mean their dead?

  1. If the heads are black this does mean that they are dead sou will need to cut off just the head part. then ur trap will grow more heads and they will open! hope i helped!

  2. I used have one too that did that. What i did was put insects like an ant on the feelers thing on its mouth that kinda look like spikes that's what I did and it opened its mouth again.

  3. I wonder what caused the Venus Fly Trap to close all of its traps?  This should be avoided because the traps can only open and close a few times before the trap dies.

You don't need anything or anyone to get them to open again.  Just wait a day or 2 and they will reopen on their own.  If they don't they will eventually turn black.

If the traps are black, they are in fact dead.  You can leave them on the plant or cut them off.  I prefer to cut them off because I don't like looking at them.  Also, there is a small chance, if the conditions are right, that fungus could grow on the dead trap and then spread to the plant and cause a fungal infection.  Obviously this should be avoided.

If you do decide to cut the traps off, be sure to leave any part of the leaf-base (the thing that looks like a leaf) that is still green.  The green parts can still perform photosynthesis and therefore are very valuable to the plant.

They are the 3 keys to keeping a healthy venus fly trap:

    1) Lots of light - At least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day

    2) Clean water - rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water only

    3) Nutrient poor soil - most growers use a 50:50 mix of peat moss and perlite

    Good luck with your plant!

  4. I have never had any luck keeping venus flytraps. One problem I had was my kids and visitors constantly wanting to trigger the traps. Artificially springing the trap, (poking it with your finger), drains the plant's energy. If this is done too often, the trap head will become less sensitive and possibly die.

Always keep dead leaves and heads cut off to prevent fungal infections. (Dead leaves and heads are a part of this plant's life cycle, and do not necessarily mean that the plant is unhealthy.)
