Question:

My Weeping Fig is dying?

I have a weeping fig (in the ficus family) and I think that it is sick or something. We just got about 3 months ago and it has slowly lost almost all of its leaves. I repotted it 2 weeks after we brought it home and 3 days ago I moved it to a different part of the house, hoping that would help. I cut back on the watering, thinking that it was being over watered as well as clipping off all the dead branches. I just don't know what is wrong with it.

  1. cut it down and hopefully it will grow back.  otherwise, call the nursery where it was purchased for their advice.

  2. They are notorious for doing that. Ficus hate being moved, dislike dry air and don't cope well with under or over watering...Just very fussy.

Decide on where you are going to keep it and do not move it again. Stand the pot on a saucer filled with gravel and water for humidity. Water regularly but not too much....stick your finger in the soil, if it is dry to the first knuckle water it.

  3. Weeping figs need a lot of light.  They grow most of them at nurseries in Florida or California in bright sun light.  You can't expect a plant to live in the dark that was grown in bright sun light.  If you take it inside you will have to expect it to lose leaves in buckets unless you take it home and leave it outside for the summer.  Even then it is going to lose leaves when you bring it inside in the fall. The stress of being over watered and given a limited amount of sunlight can do in a ficus.  You may have to try again.  However if you see new leaves forming on the ends of the shoots you are probably okay.  Give it as much sun light as possible and never water it unless it is really dry.  No more than once a week at the most and even then it may not need it more than every two weeks. Hope I gave you some help here.  Good luck. Don't fertilize until the leaves grow back.

Edit: Don't stick it outside in the full sunlight either. It has been growing in darker conditions for a few months now and you could kill it if you did that.  Put it out in the shade outside if you are going to do that not in full sun.

  4. what's wrong with it is shock... four of them....

    repotted, moved, dry period, pruned.....

you really ticked it off!.... so... pick a spot for it and leave it there..... get it on a regular watering schedule... as in, when it's dry on top of the first inch of soil, water it till the water drains out the bottom of the pot, let it drain completely, then don't water again until the top inch is dry..... don't prune anything but dead wood until spring.... WHEN you see new leaves coming on, and not before!, then you can give it fertilizer.....

since this plant is stressed, be very  aware of it getting attacked by bugs... keep a sharp eye on it....if you do see bugs, DON"T spray stuff without getting good info from someone reliable, as it could be another shock if it's the wrong thing......read up on the web about your plant....

once you know more about the plant, you'll take the best care of it!....
