Hi! My Mom's friend from work gave us her western paint turtle. His name is Pokey. A few days ago, I noticed his shell got soft in one spot... I read up on soft-shell, and put him in a pen outside to get more sun (I did put fresh water in with him). He is shedding, and I picked him up and looked to see how the under-side was doing. I noticed a soft spot, and found out that it is an infected spot. It has p***y stuff, and I don't know how to treat it! I can't take him to a vet, because there are none around! HELP!!!!!!!

You can email me at coolcatwithabullet@yahoo.com

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. well find meds of if i was you i would drive him to a vet no matter how far away it was

  3. Not to worry, your lucky its just a soft spot. Its happened to be called shell rot.

What it looks like is: white or grey spots on your turtles shell that actually penetrate the outer layer of the shell. The area may be soft. Really bad cases cause a rotten smell and often soft, weep and are red and bloody.

What generally causes it is unclean water, it's usually a bacterial infection that starts from a minor cut or scrape or from a fungus left on the shell too long, but can start by itself.

How you can avoid it is keeping the water clean, even though it may be hard, it'll save you and your turtle some greive, pain, and expense.

Keep a close eye on your turtle. Examine it and occasionally take it out of the water and let it dry out completely for a couple of hours. Provide a basking area. I know, they rarely use it but provide it just in case. If your turtle never uses be sure to force it to dry out as I mentioned above

How you can fix it: This can be very difficult and can take months. Your best bet is to never let the conditions get right for it to occur.

If it does crop up, how you proceed will depend on how advanced the shell rot is but all involve immediatly cleaning up the tank and fixing whatever problems your system has to let this occur. If you don't do this your turtle will never get better
