I have lost compression on #1 cylinder and think i'll need a rebuild. How long would it take someone of a average mechanical ability to remove, rebuild and replace the motor??

  1. A couple of days and alot of patience.....take it to a professional and get it done right.

  2. 2 days

  3. You don't have the capability or tools to rebuild. Once you split the case, you will find the crankshaft has to be pressed apart to change bearings, the pressed back and trued. Not a job for a novice. I can rebuild one in 2 days, but I do them all the time, and have a shop and tooling to do so.

You probably only need a top-end job, that is pistons and rings. That is a fairly easy job that can be done in-hull in about 2-3 hours (although that may take a novice 2-days or so). SBT has all the parts you'll need, and offer a cylinder exchange (which is probably your best bet, no honing involved), as well as complete re-man engines. Check out this site; http://www.sbtontheweb.com/Merchant2/mer...

Another place to get OEM parts is here; http://216.37.204.206/Mcmart/Partsfinder...

Be forwarned! parts ain't cheap, but those two sites I gave you are cheaper than a Yamaha dealer!

When you do fix your boat, consider using a pre-mix fuel. Oil injection can fail, and was probably the cause of your trouble.
