Question:

My Zucchini plants only grow male blossoms.?

I have green and yellow zucchini plants growing. I planted them at the beginning of summer and they have been producing blossoms, only male blossoms. I check them daily hoping to find a female blossom but nothing. We have been getting tons of rain in Upstate NY as of late so I have not been watering them, when it's dry I water them at the base, not from over head and only do it about 3-4 times a week. Anyone know why my plants are only producing male blossoms?

  1. If you take a piece of hay or long blade of grass rub the blossoms with that and touch your plants where you think a flower blossom will grow and you will pollinate your plants this way.  It has worked for me many many years .  I do that with my cucumber plants also.

  2. Pauli is correct. This is so that there will be plenty of pollen when the females appear.  Watering has nothing to do with it.

  3. "Many times, a zucchini plant will produce only male blossoms when first in bloom to ensure that pollen will be available when the female blossoms open. The male blossoms will all fall off, making it seem as though the zucchini plant is losing all of its flowers. Don’t worry, female blossoms will open soon and you will get zucchini squash"

  4. I think your plants are g*y. Take your weed eater to them before it is to late.

  5. Depending on the variety you may get a lower yield, but if not I would say it is probably a pollination problem. You should get cone flowers or something to attract bees.
