Question:

My a/c unit is blowing warm air.

Inside everything seems to be working ok. On the outside unit I noticed the fan wasn't spinning. I started by turning the circuit breaker off and then on. Then I was able to get the fan to spin by moving it with a stick and it kept spinning but it appeared to be slower than the unit next to it (we have a 2-unit system). While it's spinning i will occasionally hear a hum for 3-5 seconds and then it stops and the unit never kicks on. The unit was off for a week while we were out of town and this started as soon as we turned it on. From reading other posts it sounds like it's either 1)a bad capacitor, 2) a bad fan motor, or 3) a bad compressor. I know I'll probably have to call an A/c guy however I want to know as much as I can before he gets here and I'd really like to rule out #3 for the obvious cost reason. Any suggestions?

  1. Yep...bad fan motor or motor starter ( capacitor ). Try not to use that unit and call on Monday during regular work hours....those weekend and after hours call will kick you in the   b u t t  when it comes time to pay.

  2. the capacitor is weak if you can spin and it starts then it is NOT the fan motor . the capacitor is in the electrical panel of the unit the are usually round and about the size of a coke can. take it to any a/c supply store and get an exact replacement for about 15 buck . or call the a/c guy and pay him about two hundred bucks

  3. Bad condenser fan motor call on the weekend will be between 400$-500$Better shut the power off to the unit or you will have a bad compressor call and that's between 1500$-2000$
