when the ac is first turned on it will blow out a good amount of cool air, but after 15 minutes is like something happens and the airflow slows to a trickle. i have used foam insulation on all the exposed piping that i can find because it was freezing over badly. but it is still having the same problem. im not sure if its the exterior ac unit itself, or if it has something to do with the central air unit which is located in a hallway closet. can anyone help me please, its 100 degrees here and we can only get the house cooled down to 90 at night, it is killing me!!!

  1. dirty filter dirty evap coil or low on refrigerant or blower not working those are the four things to cause icing up either way your going to have to call a tech

  2. Low on refrigerant. Might be dirty evaperator coil or dirty filter but airflow would be low at first too. You might not detect that the airflow is low due to dirty coil or coil. Call the service man.

  3. The indoor coil is freezing up.

Is the fan motor in the indoor unit still running when the airflow quits? If so the motor may need to be replaced.

If the fan motor is still running then the airflow stops because it's freezing up the indoor coil.

The filter being plugged is a common cause but if that's not it the coil itself could be plugged with dirt or its low on refrigerant.

  4. If the pipes outside are frosted over you are low on freon and so the inside coil is freezing up.Need to have unit serviced...The air flow stops due to the coil becoming a block of ice..

  5. Run the fan ONLY for 45 minutes and turn the cool off. This will completely remove all the ice. Then run it as normal and it will start to cool again.Check for a dirty fiter or coil.

If all the ice is completely off the coil,it wont freeze in 15 minutes. It will take a couple of hours if the cause is not fixed.

If it continues to freeze after checking the filter and coil, the blower is running on the wrong speed , she's low on refrigerant,or the metering device is not feeding properly.
