My adopted robin nestling ate too much- help?

Yesterday my puppy found a baby robin that had fallen from its nest, seemingly unhurt. The bird is very lucky that Daisy didn't get the chance to hurt her. The baby ended up sleeping in the garage due to a storm last night and was very hungry this morning.

I did some research and everyone says that robins should be fed until they are no longer asking for food. All i had was puppy food wich i soaked in water until it was mushy. It liked that enough and just kept asking for more until it started blinking a swallowing many times. She seems a little better now but she is still swallowing every once in a while. I stoped feeding her for a little while but she will need to eat in about 20.

Really i wanted to know how much a 1-2 week old robin should be eating and if they will actualy eat too much.

any other tips would be great too. Thanks

  1. hello =)

first iff you said she'd fallen from a nest?

then you should have put her back =/ not kept onto her

i mean what are you going to do with her whens she/he is older?

    more to the point,

generally birds will stop eating when they have had enough. .  when he stops opening his mouth for food is when you should stop ....

wet, tinned dog food is fine

make sure chicken, or meat is the main ingredient.

also make sure you keep the lil guy warm.

  2. You should not be caring for this bird at all, it is illegal..you should get it back to it's parents which may still be around looking for it if you have not had the bird for too long.  You should  replace the bird in a make-shift nest using a basket or pail with handle and hanging it as close as possible to the original nest location.  The parents should be able to locate their baby by it's begging calls and will continue to care for it.  ONLY if you are postive the parents are not caring for this bird should you get it to a local wildlife rehab where experts can care for it and release it back into the wild when ready.

  3. Put the bird back where you found it.  The parents will still take care of it and feed it properly.  You are going to cause it to aspirate (choke to death) by feeding it too much.  Parents will still take care of him even though you have touched it.  Please read my profile.

  4. Go to pet store and get kaytee hand feeding formula

  5. We actually had a situation about a week ago where, there was a robin's next with 3 baby birds in a Grape Awning that we had to remove for a re-model. We called PAWS and they said that we had to wait by LAW. But my dad was pretty insistant that a birds nest wasn't gonna stop our re-model. So, instead, amazingly, we relocated it to a tree near-by. We figured the mother would abandon it. NOPE! She came back to the tree.

It was happily ever after :)

Make sure the mother has abandoned it before you take it away from its mother.

    Is it fully feathered?

If its not it needs to be INCUBATED and if it cannot fly you need to keep it WARM!

The problem is; keeping this bird alive is a 'round the clock duty. It needs to be fed A LOT. I suggest you call the Fish and Wildlife center because if not I'm afraid your dooming the baby robin :(

  6. Ok first of all the robin should be put back in the nest she came from asap. If not possible than make a nest out of a strawberry container or a coolwhip bowl put some holes in bottom for drainage. Then put tissues in for warmth. Attaach to the safest place near where she fell. Hide and watch for hour see if parent birds come back. they will not leave her because you touched her they have poor sense of smell. They will recognize her cry and she wil theirs. If they dont come back and feed in hour then you need to call vet that takes wildlfe or who can refer you to a wildlife rehabber to take the baby. Chances are it will not survive if you try to raise it plus it is agains the law. If this bird has no feathers or very few it needs to be kept very warm. make a nest put the nest in box and place heating pad under box. Needs to be fed every 20 mins to every half hour. Feeding should consist of chopped mealworms, and hand feeding formula you get at pet store. You can give water soaked cat or dog food but not to much as the nutrients are not right. It may also eat chopped up blueberries and grapes. Chopped tiny. Let the bird digest what it has in its crop. You can gently rub its throat to help it. DO NOT give it any water unless it is fully feathered as they get their hydration from their foods. It could aspirate it into its lungs and die. If it opens its mouth to breathe this is a bad sign. Please get it to a rehabber if cant get back in nest.  Nice of you to take care of this little baby.

  7. Seriously you should not be feeding it dog food. It will do better on wheat bread or KAYTEE HAND FEEDING FORMULA.
