I just noticed my african grey parrot (5months old) has a red patch of skin above her eye. The eye seems to be un affected and she is still playful in nature. It is not bleeding, but is very red. Possibly could have been cased by a fall during the night or scratching? Would her skin heal naturally, or should i put anticiptic cream onto it? is it ok to use human anticiptics on birds such as Savalon cream?

  1. You should take her to an Avian Vet.  You can't try home treatments with pets and think they'll work.

No offense, but if you're on a tight budget, you would've known when you GOT the bird, especially if she's onyl 5 months old....

  2. Hi parrots are expensive to own and you should never assume that they aren't going to need a vets care ... With that said are all the feathers gone in that area have you looked her over to see if she has other areas like this ?? If you look at her feet and legs does it look like she is pulling out feathers and irritated ?? It sounds like bird lice / mites to me .... You can go to the pet store and buy a spray for that but makes sure you read the directions and follow them... As far as putting something on it you can use neosporin it is an anti bacterial and will not harm her... You should really take her to the vet if you don't have experience with parrots ... Oh lice / mites like warm places so around her nares and legs is where you will find the signs of thier exsistence ... Once you start to treat her you have to clean her cage and toys to insure that they are gone.... Good Luck

  3. Please don't use any ordinary antiseptics as they are toxic to birds. It sounds like an infection to me, and you HAVE to take your bird to an avian vet as soon as possible if you want her to live for sure -- visit http://www.aav.org to find the nearest avian vet. If you're on a tight budget, shouldn't have gotten an African Grey parrot in the first place. And your bird is pretty young, so it is probably even more vulnerable to disease. However, click on the link I gave you and you can ask those guys for some first aid advice; they will probably help out in some way.
