than it stop cooling the house and the temp goes up.

for example, I have it set at 73 and stay at 73 with no problems, but when the tempetures hits 100 degress outside, than it does not cool down but the temp inside the house gets up to 88 degree. setting the cage lower makes it worst. anyone might know what is wrong.

  1. you might need a bigger ton system or your coil may need cleaning

  2. USA    If the unit has been serviced, I will assume the freon does need to be charged, the coils are clean and there is plenty of room for air circulation around the unit.  I will also assume the ducts are in excellent condition.  Make sure the filters are clean, and the insulation on the pipe is in excellent condition.

One item that might be a problem:  The unit might not have enough cooling capacity for your house.  When the unit was installed, a calculation was performed to determine how many Btu your unit had to be.  They range from 20,000 Btu on up.  As part of the calculation, they have to plug in a number for the expected high temperature.  Many folks use 90 degrees as the high.  Have a calculation performed by a HVAC tech or by a company that sells the A/C units, and compare the size of the unit they come up with to the size of the unit you have.

Also, on one hundred plus degree days, with everybody using the A/C to the max, the power company is probably overloaded, which might result in a voltage drop on the supply lines.  You can check this with a cheap volt meter.  Your unit is probably designed to operate normally at 200 volts to 240 volts.  If you are dropping below 200, this will add to the problem.

Still no luck?  Call a different licensed HVAC or Cooling technician and have it checked out.

  3. It might need to be recharged. If you have not had it cheked out, you should.
