Hey, i supposedly sprained my ankle a month ago, got an x ray which confirmed it wasn't broken, etc. I'm worried now as my ankle is still totally swollen up and looks like a club. Could i have done some serious damage that hasn't been picked up??

  1. It's fairly normal for it still to be a bit swollen after a month or so as it takes ages to get back into shape.  Same thing happened to me and I thought it would never get back to normal, but it does.

The foot has so many very tiny bones in it which can easily be damaged but not so easily fixed.  x-rays don't always pick up on very tiny breakages.  But there's not much can be done about them.

If you have been using the crutches, resting the ankle and taking it fairly easy, at least your doing all the right things.

Believe me, your ankle will take a while to get back to normal but it will happen.  Be patient.

    Good luck.

  2. If you are worried, do go back to your GP and ask for a referral back to get it x-rayed again, whilst you are there, they may offer you some reassurance that this is normal or they may suggest a course of action such as physiotherapy which will start building the muscles and ligaments up once again.

If you go to physio, they have a lot of experience in sports injuries and lots of treatments to be able to hopefully get your ankle better, in my recent experience, the  physio was able to tell me a problem with my shoulder which didn't show on an x-ray because it was soft tissue and the hospital had said was nothing.

The right thing to do, if you are worried, and it is still swollen and painful is to get some further advice.

You could continue to Rest Ice Compression & Elevate over today and see how it is tomorrow.

There are lots of little bones and plenty of tendons, ligaments and muscles in the ankle and foot, so it could be when you strained it, you strained a lot of these things and is just taking it's time to heal properly.

    Hope it gets better soon

  3. Well, this will help the swelling go down

Take some hairspray and massage on your ankle for 14 seconds. Then dip it in a bowl of orange juice. Do this daily.

  4. PMSL AT CONNOR LOL

  5. Its fairly normal - did they tell you what grade sprain it was? It's possible there was extensive ligament/tendon damage which does come with a long healing process due to the nature of the structure and where it is (the fact its quite difficult for us to be off our feet for a longer period of time in order for complete rest).

If you are really worried about it go back to your GP or go and see a podiatrist.
