Question:

My aunt adopted me, what are my chances of receiving my citizenship?

I am 20 years old and an immigrant, my aunt who is a citizen adopted me when I was 19. My guess is that the way this plays out is that she is my sponsor/parent. Is there really a chance that I will receive citizenship? And if there is a chance, do I have to go through a migration/legal process, or do I immediately receive a social security number, I am very unsure and confused about this. (Please just honest, helpful answers)

  1. Too old so the chances of getting U.S. citizenship thru adoption is ZERO....

    Qualification of automatic citizenship of adopted children

    Under the CCA, the adopted child will automatically acquire U.S. citizenship on the date that all of the following requirements are satisfied:

             1. At least one adoptive parent is a U.S. citizen;

             2. The child is under 18 years of age;

             3. A full and final adoption of the child is completed; and

             4. The child is in the U.S. as a permanent resident.

    Individuals who are 18 years of age or older on February 27, 2001, do not qualify for citizenship under the CCA, even if they meet all other criteria. If they wish to become U.S. citizens, they must apply for naturalization and meet eligibility requirements that currently exist for adult lawful permanent residents.

  2. how did you get into the country?  do you have a valid visa?

  3. As others said, 19 years cannot be adopted.

  4. Because you were 19, legally an adult, you have to go through the immigration process.  By the way, your aunt may have adopted you, but I doubt there was any state recognized legal adoption, again, because you are an adult.

    Best to contact a lawyer who specializes in immigration.
