My baby's diarrhea now looks like sweet potatoes. Should I be alarmed?

My 13 month old has had diarrhea for three days. No fever. No vomitting. Happy as a clam. This evening it was much less watery, but despite her bland diet of apple sauce, bread, rice cereal and bananas, her BMs now looks like sweet potatoes right out of the jar. Should the orange/red color concern me? We were glad it had a thicker consistency actually...

  1. I'm constantly amazed by the rainbow of colours that emerge from my baby's bum, regardless of what's gone in the other end!

As long as it's not bloody, then the firming up is the most important thing.

  2. No if its thicking up your should be happy.  But for her to be having diarrhea for that long you should go to the doctor or at least call them.  Babies dehydrate much easier the we do.  And that would be a big worry, even with her being a happy baby.  But the orange/red color does it have that blood smell to it?  I know that sounds nasty but blood has a smell!  If not I would just watch it and see if it last, some of it maybe her just digesting it.  But if it was blood you would know it would browner most of the time.  If it was like fresh next to the r****m it would be the bright red.

  3. you can try giving her antidiarrhea medicine. Try the cherry flavored or another flavor besides the plain, will taste better to her. That she help the loose BMs. If the diarrhea continues over the next couple of days you can take her to dr.

  4. You're pretty much giving her the 'BRAT' diet. (Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast).

Some believe this is good for diarrhea, some believe it's an old fashioned diet.  But, it could be the reason why she's getting better!
