She was born 6lbs 11oz. I breastfed her for 5 months. She gained her discharged weight very well, but her eating pattern has never been good. She'd nurse for about 15-30 seconds then stop, then wanted to nurse in 10-15 mins. I waited until she was so hungry to feed her, hoping she'd eat more, but nothing changed. She is now 6 1/2 mos, and I am doing 30%bottlefeeding, 30%breastfeeding, and 30%solidfood. She is eating way too little compare to other babies. I'd say she takes only 1-1 1/2 jars of solids, 10 oz of formula (enfamil), and 4 times breastfeeding (not long each time) a day. I can't make her eat more because she'd spit up everything. I am very stressful. So far, she is active and happy. My question is: should I give her Similac Neosure to gain weight since she does not eat much? Thanks alot.

  1. I would quit the solids because they do not offer enough calories and are keeping her from filling up on breast milk or formula.

Have you seen a lactation consultant to help with the nursing issues you are having - it is very possible she never learned a good latch and therefore leaves the breast early and that is why she is back 15 minutes later wanting to nurse.

All said, 12% is not that low of a percentile - is your doctor concerned?

  2. My personal opinion is that if she's active and happy, she's fine. If you're really worried, ask her doctor.

My son only weighed 15 pounds at 6 months. He's now 9 months old and only weighs 16 pounds. I'm comfortable with that.

A lot of it is genetics, both his father and I were small babies, and neither of us are tall adults.

  3. it sounds ok to me, i wouldn't worry too much. i wouldn't give her any special formula to gain weight (unless your pediatrician says to). just give her formula/breastmilk more often if you're worried. when my baby was 6 months she weighed 14lbs 10 oz (25%). She was born 5lb 8oz. She just turned 8 months now and has really gotten chubbier the last couple of months. I'm guessing she weighs 18 1/2 pounds now.

Some babies just have smaller appetites, and that's OK. Just keep offering her breastmilk/formula/solids and allow her to eat what she wants.

  4. did you see your pediatrician for the 6 month shots? if so and the doc wasnt concerned than i wouldnt worry but if you havent i would consult your doc with any concerns because us people on yahoo answers are smart sometimes but we are no doctor and playing around with your daughters health is not worth it.

  5. I know you are looking for answers, but this would best be answered by your pediatrician.
