it doesn't smell like normal baby spit up. He is 3 1/2 months old, and currently breastfeeding, formula feeding, and eating rice cereal (sometimes plane and sometimes with banana or pears in it) which was recommended by his doctor. Last week he was really sick with bad coughing, a fever, and some diarrhea. He since has gotten a lot better, but when he spits up it smells really sour like the through up of an older child. Any ideas of what could be wrong?

  1. yes, wondering why your doc started out on solids and rice cereal so young?  I was told nowadays babies don't start even rice cereal until 4-6 months old for allergic reasons and so the baby can sit up unassisted before solids begin.  Maybe he's allergic to one of those foods?

  2. Sounds like it could be sour stomach. Is he still sick? If i were you i would at least call the dr. if spitting up isn't normal for your baby.

  3. Well, you are feeding him as though he was an older child. That would explain the smell. My guesses as to the problem: Either he's reacting badly to the solid food, which would make sense at his young age, or his neck is out of alignment. A chiropractor can fix that. My daughter always vomited more when her neck was out.

  4. Wow, that's a lot of different foods for a 3.5 month old to be digesting.  Did you introduce each item on its own for about a week or so in order to determine if there would be any adverse reaction?  How is he otherwise?  Relatively happy throughout the day?  Perhaps he is just to full.  Alternatively, he could be experiencing reflux issues.  You should have your doctor check him out, just to be on the safe side.

  5. too young for all of that cereal and food!!
