Question:

My baby keeps peeing through his diapers?

My 13 month old wears size 6 in diapers and through out the day he is fine and doesnt have any problems with peeing outside of his diaper. However overnight he pees in the bed. I do not wake him up to change him because he wont go back to sleep if I do and he is very much a baby that needs his sleep and doesnt want to be bothered. I have just bought huggies overnights along with just regular diapers. The regular diapers are for the day and the overnight are obviously for overnight. He still peed though the overnights. I have tried putting him a bigger size but i cannot find size 7 anywhere. I do not know what else to do to keep him from peeing through his diaper. Should I try not letting him drink anything after a certain time. I dont really want to do that either because he still drinks a bottle before he goest to bed and I know that is the reason why he is peeing so much but i am willing to change his routine so he doesnt have to sleep in p**s all night.

  1. I had this same problem!!!

My solution was a combination of two things,

First: Buy Boys size S/M GoodNights diapers (made by huggies, found in diaper aisle), there are like a size 7 and they hold way more fluid.

If his diaper is dry and his bed is wet, it is because he is having an erection when he pees, and it is going right out the side, be aware that stuffing his diaper could cause skin irritations, and a too tight diaper (especially for a boy) cuts of circulation and is very uncomfortable.

2nd: I would limit his fluid intake the last hour of bed, only allowing sips, and 1 night night drink before bed. This worked great for me. And just check on him before you go to bed, or if you wake in the night.

  2. First off, you do need to wake him up and change him at night when he pees in his diaper and you know it because if you dont and he is in his wet soggy diaper all night it can lead to diaper rash and can get pretty bad. Have you tried Pampers diapers? Maybe he is just a heavy pee-er and the diapers arent holding it in. Have you tried looking for the training pants that are cloth(not sure if they make them anymore) or if they dont buy rubber pants and put over his diaper and that will hold the pee in until the morning and hopfully wont get all over his sheets, also put a mattrees protector over his crib matress so the matress doesnt get rueined.

  3. You should start weining him off the bottle- he is getting to the age he doesn't need it much longer.

You could get some of the plastic pants like what they would use for cloth diapers and put those over the regular diaper at night, or try pull ups I am not sure if they are more absorbent.  The plastic pants will protect the bed.

I would try to do away with the bottle and see if that helps any.  I am sure he is eating real food all the time now, so he probably does not really need it.

  4. My son sometimes pees out of his diaper at night..I found that putting his sippy cup away 2 hours before bed makes a difference and changing him into a clean diaper right before putting him to sleep....Thats my experience and that is what has worked for me...Good luck...

  5. Do not use pull ups, they absorb less than diapers. The Huggies Overnights are the most absorbant you'll find. Also, How much does he weigh? Does he really need a size 6? Use the appropriate size for his weight, as it is possible that the diapers are actually too big and, gaping when he is lying down, which is causing the leaks. My son only wore up to a 4 unitl he was potty trained - I can't imagine a 13 month old being big enough gfor a size 6.

Also, change him immediately before bed and do not give him any liquid one hour before bed.

Excessive nightime urination can be an early sign of juvenile diabetes. So, if he still leaks, even through a size 4 or 5 Huggies nitghttime, with no liquids before bed, then you may want to consult your pedatrician for a sugar test, just to rule that out.

  6. my son has always had this problem since he was like 9 months old, but it is worse if the diaper is too big or too small, which sounds like you could have him in a size too big. Eventually I switched to using a system called gdiapers (gdiapers.com) and at night I double the inserts so it is double the absorbancy of one diaper. It works! he is now 25 months old and it's still working, once I ran out and put a huggies on him, forget it! The whole crib was soaked.

  7. Nighttime is hard because babies go such an extended period of time without being changed. It would be nice to switch him to a larger size at night but like you said, size 7 diapers are not easy to come by. Which brand are you using? Perhaps you could switch to a more expensive brand just for at night. Perhaps try a size 6 Pampers or Huggies? I also like your idea about avoiding his last bottle before bed. Maybe give it to him at 7ish (or an hour before bedtime) and then change him right before you lay him down? I hope you find something that works!

  8. My daughter had the same issue and my DR told me to place a heavy overnight pad inside her diaper to catch any extra pee overnight. He said that it's meant to go against skin, just make sure it has no odor because the scents could irrate her. Hope that helps!

  9. I would try giving him most of his fluids earlier in the day and afternoon.  You could also pick up some gerber vinyl pants. But I know that you really don't want him sleeping in a soggy diaper.

So definitely try limiting fluids after a certain time in the evening so his bladder is mostly empty.

  10. Maybe the diapers are actually too big and cannot absorb fast enough while he is lying down without leaking. Have you tried going by the suggested weight on the packaging of diapers or maybe just one size larger? I recall size 6 diapers are suggested for children that are 55lbs.Most children that age are between 25 lbs and 35 lbs. A larger diaper doesn't always mean it holds more liquid. It's similar to a pair of pants, if you buy a pair of pants that are two sizes to big what happens? They fall off. Buying a diaper that is two sizes two big may mean the urine just leaks right out. Consider cutting his night time bottle in half and working on finding something else to console him while he tries to fall asleep, such as a favorite stuffed toy or blanket.

  11. My son has the same problem (18 mos).  I have started sneaking in and changing him when I go to bed around 1 or 2 am.  He is generally a pretty sound sleeper and usually just mumbles and rolls over (last night he sat up and said "puppy" and went back to sleep LOL.)

Other than that, maybe use a towel?  I don't really know.  I hope you find a good answer!

  12. Try putting a regualr diper on him and then put on overnight  ones over them. We did that with my daughter and it worked. We had the same problem. We also cut back on her milk before bed. We slowly weaned her off of the bottle before bed by just like everyother day we reduced the amount of milk and now she is perfectly great and does not need her bottle to fall asleep.

  13. change them more often and keep looking for bigger dipers, try other brands as well, only change drinking habits as a last resort.

  14. You are correct in that your child drinking just before bed is the problem.  In the next month or so, try making the transition to a last sippy cup of milk 1 hour before bed time.

In the meantime, purchase Huggies Overnight Diapers - they hold anything and everything all night long.

Sometimes going a size up is the opposite of what you want to try.  Boys especially may need a diaper a size smaller.

  15. Try to limit fluids after dinner.  Try using a goodnites over the top of his diaper.  Make the bedtime bottle half of what you normally give him also.

  16. The only thing I can think of other than what you have tried is if you can find them big enough - putting on the plastic diaper covers (the ones that go over the cloth diapers).

  17. I would use a size 3 diaper that isn't attached, just sort of laying inside the huggies overnight diaper.....make sure the overnight huggies diaper is very snug, sometimes the gaps is what causes the leaks, not the absorbency of the diaper.

Also, try to limit his fluid intake in the evenings.  He'll do fine not to have any liquids 3 or 4 hours before bedtime.

    Good Luck

  18. Don't let him drink anything an hour before he goes to bed. And try Pampers. I don't know about you-but in my experinces- I prefer Pampers above Huggies..

  19. My daughter was the same way. Always woke up soaked. I don't bother changing her either. Leave a sleeping baby lie!!!LOL

I did cut out her bedtime water, and that helped some, but she is just a heavy wetter. I read that it is not only the quantity, but how strong their stream is. A strong stream can literally blast through the seams of the diapers. I would be more concerned about the diapers being too big, as opposed to too small. Are the seams fitting snugly around the legs?

What I ended up doing, was purchasing an aristrocrat wool soaker, that is made to go over cloth diapers at night.Wool can absorb fifty percent of its weight in water, is anitbacterial, and breathable. IT seems to have helped. In the morning the soaker will be damp, but her p.j.s are still dry. Good luck.

  20. You might look for something called 'Diaper Doublers' that you can get at Babies 'r Us.

Basically, it's a real absorbent pad that you insert into the diaper.

  21. Pampers just came out with Crusiers in size 7.  You can buy them online here:

    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp...

You could also put on a pull-up OVER the diaper too...

While this may not solve your problem (my little guy ... 15 mos... was peepeeing through his diaper at night b/c he became a tummy sleeper not too long ago on his own accord), it will help until you can switch up the routine.  What I started doing is giving him his bottle of milk earlier in our bedtime routine.  I was giving him 8 ounces, and dropped it to 6 oz.  He was having a "snack" after dinner (yogurt, a graham cracker, something like that), so I wasn't concerned about him being hungry.  So, he learned to not rely on his bottle to calm him to sleep.  Once he was used to the earlier bottle time (it was the only bottle he got during the day), I swapped the bottle for the cup and he never missed it.

Bottom line, earlier bottle (or cup!  try it!) :) time... bigger diaper (for now)... and less to drink in his baba. :)  Good luck, sweetie... hang in there! :)

  22. wow, my daughter is 2 and is in size 5, but yeah some brands my daughter pees through. dont let him drink much after 6 or 7 depending on his bedtime.

  23. I'm sure you may have already done this.....but try various brands of diapers...My girls are 9 and 10 yrs. now but I went through the same thing for a short period of time.  I never like huggies just for that reason, they  always gave me problems.  just try various brands, even the no name brands until you find one that fits/works the best.  I remember there was a no-name brand i used when my girls were in diapers but can't remember the name....they worked great at night for me.

  24. they do not make diapers larger then size 6... try using pull-ups on him to see if that might help.  I would cut back on the amount you give him at night for bed.... not completely cut it off cold turkey though.

Not necesarily... because during the day you are changing him more frequently then at night. that is why he is not peeing through during the daytime.

  25. Your son shouldn't be on the bottle at all. It's recommended that children are weaned from the bottle by age one because it can do damage to their teeth.

Cut out the nightly bottle and see if that helps in improving anything. Pampers Cruisers DOES make a size 7 but I don't know how well you'll be able to find them in the stores. You may have to order them online.
