Question:

My baby may be lactose intolerant, how can I still breastfeed him?

I brought him to a G.I. specialist yesterday and she's pretty sure he has a food allergy due to a little bit of blood in his stool. He has had stomach ultrasounds and the blood was tested to see if there was bacteria in it, all negative. Since I cut out dairy, no more blood. SHe says that I'll have to stop all dairy, even food that has milk, butter or cheese slightly mixed in it, since I'm breastfeeding him. I wanted to do it for a year, but I'm addicted to dairy, especially cheese, and I don't think I can do this. He's only 15 weeks. Does anyone have recommendations on anything I can eat that I can use as a dairy substitute but that doesn't taste like c**p? I heard soy is bad to drink b/c it has estrogen in it. can I have goats milk and goats cheese? thanks!

  1. Soy is not bad to drink at all. It takes a HEAVY dose of soy to produce enough estrogen to even cause any type of affect. Silk Soy milk is pretty yummy (vanilla flavored) and it goes great with cereal, cookies or just by itself. They also make soy ice cream, yogurt and I believe there is lactose free ice cream as well. You'd have to look into the cheeses though. Rice milk is also a good dairy substitute. You'd have to ask the dr. about the goat's milk and goat cheese however I think it is still considered dairy. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!

  2. I don't know about diary free foods, I just wanted to say well done for continuing to breast feed, So many would give up in that situation.
