We want to name our baby after my great grandfather and my fiance's father. This would make the name Ryer Thomas, Ryer was my great grandfather (Norwegian) and Thomas is my fiance's father. I have a cousin that is named Thomas Ryer (the Ryer is from the same great grandfather and I'm not sure where the Thomas is from). I don't have a relationship with the cousin and we live far away from one another. My immediate family doesn't see this particular cousin either. Do you think that our choice of name is acceptable considering my cousin's name?

  1. I think it's very acceptable, I mean they don't even have the same name! I know it's similar and sort of odd that you have a family member with the same combination but if you're not in touch with this relative then what the heck! Ryer Thomas is a great name!

  2. given that it is a coincidences and named after someone actually other than him, i see no problem with it. and ryer--very different, but i totally like it!!! i would go for it. if anyone has a problem with it, just explain it was not after the cousin but after your fiance's father. simple as that. congrats on your baby boy, they are very special--i have a 4 yr old son named cade.

  3. yes of course, dont not name it that because of your cousin, you'll regret it, its a nice name too,

  4. Course. They technically aren't the same names !

  5. name it something totally different and then have the middle name after someone you know like your great grandfaher or whatever but those two names dont go

  6. i think that you should name the baby Thomas Ryer, since you kind of said that you don't see your cousin who lives far away.

  7. Yeah totally. That name is lovely too, really interesting :)

  8. I think it would be fine to name your son that, if you dont see the cousin or anything like that, but even if you did they would still have different first names so it wouldn't matter.

  9. No choose another name.

  10. It's totally acceptable. You could always contact the cousin and let him know why you're using the names (if it makes you feel more comfortable).

When naming our son, we wanted to use Zachary as his middle name - the only name we liked. I have a cousin with the name, so I called and asked if they minded and they were thrilled.

I think you've chosen a GREAT name!! Good Luck!

  11. sure. Why not? It's your child. It's not like you see them constantly and it would become a problem. Do what you want to. =]

  12. I think you should use it. If you're not close to this person then chances are your baby will never even meet him, so it shouldn't be an issue. I have Claire picked out for when I have a daughter and my husband had a bit of a problem with it because he has a cousin named Anna Claire. But if the 4 years we've been married I've never met her and he hasn't had any contact with her, so why not use the name?

  13. I don't think it matters. If nobody sees him, and they'll never really meet, then nobody can accuse you of stealing the name. And besides, you can say it's a coincidence if it comes to that. I mean how many John Smiths are there out there? And besides, I know I always thought it was cool if I had the same name as someone.. Hope this helped! :)

  14. If you aren't  particularly close to the cousin then i don't  see why it would matter.

personally i wouldnt do it, but that's just because i know the way my family is...

  15. course it is. its your baby!

  16. Ryer??? Uh that name sounds really bad. Why not Rylie, or Ryder?

  17. Of course. I think your choice is perfectly acceptable. Good luck! I love how you decided to name your son after important people in your life. That's very special.

    -Lilly

  18. I personally don't like the name Ryer but uh... I think you should go with something SIMILAR... like Riley or Ripper, even.
