Question:

My back hurts after I canter? I ride English.?

How would I prevent that? Also, how do I make sure it doesn't permanetly (sp?) damage my back?

  1. yeah the previous answer is very correct. all horses or ponies have a different rythem. so it make through you off and make u lean forward in an occward way that your body dosn't like. always try and arch or back, becuase sometimes you make be "rolling" or moving you back to much and this may cause you pain.

Make sure you are riding in the correct position and you are sitting deep without bouncing in the saddle (bad for your back...and the horse's :) ).  If all that is correct, try doing some strengthening exercises for the muscles in your back, and also stretch those muscles at least a couple times a day.  If your back hurts at other times, have it checked out by a doctor or someone such as a sports chiropractor.  Hope this helps, and good luck!

It's hard to say what exactly is causing it.  You might be leaning forward and causing it, but you might also be sitting up and still have that problem.  Some horses hurt my back more than others.  I'm not sure how much this will help, but you can try stretching your back before your get on...  and make sure your posture is correct when you're riding.  You could also take an aspirin or something before you get on so it will fight the pain while you ride.
