My back has been hurting me for about a year. The pain comes and goes every few weeks and it's always in the back part of my ribcage, but it's not a bone pain, it's more like a sharpish ache. It really bothers me and no matter how I stand or sit, my posture doesnt help. I'm 14 btw, What could be causing this and what can I do to relieve it?

  1. i think most people has some kind of back trouble you could see a doctor he or she should know what to do.

  2. ~ Hi ~ ! Well, since you specifically mentioned your posture, the mom in me immediately thinks there could be a connection between the muscle pain and your posture. Posture issues most definitely lead to back pain and it will be prolonged and often intermittent. Other things to consider:

~ Are you spending a lot of time on the computer? Are you using a supportive chair (that provides support to your upper back). Are you aware of your posture?

~ While doing homework are you sitting in a supportive chair as opposed to in a bent over position? It's important to think about your back. I know it sounds corny, but a little prevention will help your back.

~ A personal issue with me are BACKPACKS - I see students walking hunched over like old people and it makes me angry (and I know there's not a lot that can be done about it), but as a parent I have personally advocated that our School District have home books (that don't have to go back to the school until the end of the school year) and classroom books. That STAY in the class. This ensures that students backpacks don't have to be as heavy. I know it's a matter of money each School District has. But, do consider the weight in your backpack and if there are ways it can be lighter. There is no reason to ruin your back.

Have you told your parents about this pain? I know if it were me, I would want my child(ren) to tell me when they're in pain. So, let your parents know and they can take you to your Doctor and you can have an X-Ray taken. This will check the curvature of your spine and make sure everything is normal.

In the meantime, if your parents have a heat pad or hot water bottle around the house, try applying heat to your back. That will help to relax your muscles.

I hope you get relief and answers soon! =)
