Question:

My bag setup...?

I am thinking of altering the current set in my bag.

Driver - Titleist 905r w/ Proforce V2 stiff

3 wood - Cleveland steel 15* stiff

Irons - Srixon i-506 stiff 3-pw

GW - Cleveland Reg 588 51*

SW - Titleist Vokey Oil Can 56*

LW - Taylormade Rac Black 60*

I'm thinking of ditching one of my wedges (I have four) and going for a 2 iron (or maybe even a one iron if i can find one - my friend has one and I can rip it 230 on a good day.) Do you think this is a good idea for a 2.5 handicapper? Personally, I don't use my lob wedge for much at all, just the occasional lob or soft, short bunker shot. Also, my 3 wood has seemingly lost all hits "pop" and I want to get a new one. I know they went out of business, but are Sonartec woods really all they are hyped up to be? Sorry for the long speal...

Thanks.

  1. I like your set up how it is.  Im a plus 3 handicapper and take it from me, the 4 wedges is a good idea.  If you really want to make good scores, your gonna need lots of distances to go to inside 120.  I switched to having 4 vokey wedges 60- 48 last year, and it took my game to the next level.

learn how to swing each of you wedges at 7:30 9:00 and 11:30 and learn those distances.  I guarantee your game will take off.

  2. I've got several Sonartec woods (driver, 3 & 5) and numerous MD hybrids (15, 19, 21, 23, and 25 deg.) and I love'em! For an aging geezer like myself, they allow me to keep pace (distance-wise) with the younger players in my foursome, and they're so darned easy to hit. An LPGA pro who I caddied for last summer turned me on to them & I'm eternally grateful.

Now if I could just putt...

  3. Here is another idea to think about, I have done this and It fits all of my needs and thins my bag for more options, I've replaced my SW and LW  with a standard  57/58 degree wedge with the standard bounce.  I've found that a SW for me is really no good for chip or pitch shots because of the large amount of bounce it has and the LW was just to limited in it's uses.  You can always open the clubface and get more bounce for in the sand or for more loft when needed.  This would let you keep your 3 wood and maybe add a 2 or 1 iron.   Bogey golfer is just a screen name,  haha.  .. good luck.

  4. Keep (or replace) the 3 wood, cause it'd be a good back-up driver, and good for long par 5's.  Maybe it IS a good idea to ditch the LW, cause if you can open and close the face to your SW, you can pretty much do without the LW.

Maybe you can look into a hybrid 2 iron?  It'll give you the same distance and all, but with more forgiveness than a 2 iron would give you.  That's personal preference, though.

Sonartec used to get pretty good reviews, and Jim Furyk seems to like them (or at least, did).  It sure wouldn't hurt to try 'em out....

  5. I like the setup.  For woods I have a TM Burner - stiff.  Can crush the ball with a simple, easy swing.  If you want to ditch the lob wedge, just open the face of your sand if you need some extra height.
