Question:

My bandwidth makes no sense?

I have cable internet.

A 150mb video takes me about 2hrs to upload to Youtube

While uploading, internet is being incredibly slow, why? Youtube can't be using that much bandwidth, based on the slow upload speed.

This doesn't make any sense to me as my regular browsing speed is around 400kbs.

Downloading a 150mb video usually takes me less than 10 minutes.

I've had download speeds of up to 800kb/s before

Does anyone know how I can optimize my upload speed?

Or can anyone explain why my entire bandwidth is being drained for 2 hrs just to upload a video.

I'm having similar issues with FTP, while my upload speed is measuring 60kb/s my internet is acting as if I was uploading something at 500kb/s, being slow at everything else I do.

  1. if you using firefox type "about:config" into the web address bar and change your maximum number of outgoing requests and maximum number of simultaneous connections.  You bandwidth is being killed by the number of attempts your connection is making on youtube with limits your outgoing requests for more info (ie it affects you ability to request new pages to be displayed or for new downloads.

  2. If you can, restrict your upload speed to 80% of your maximum upload speed. When you are downloading web pages etc, your PC needs to reply that it has received a page etc. but all the bandwidth has been taken up by your upload so it slows down the reply and therefore the rest of the web page. Hence your internent being slow.

    Hope that makes sense !

  3. The up/down-load speeds are asynchronous, meaning that they aren't matched and that your download speed will always be much greater than your upload speed.  Your upload speed will depend greatly on your carriers allotment to you for bandwidth and will vary greatly, especially during business hours.

150Mb is a large file to upload, and it may help if you do this in off-peak hours.
