  1. Due to having water in your basement it would be very smart to have the drain  or hole cleaned out and putting a new sump pump in. The water in basement will cause mold and dampness problems. These problems can be hazardous to your family's health.

It was put there because of water coming into the basement and to create a low place for easy removal of water.

  2. I don't think the basement flooded because of the sump hole. That old sump pump hole was there for a reason, the basement floods. Get a new pump with a water level switch so it will turn on automatically when the water rises.

  3. IMO, enlarge the hole by 25%, so there's no chance of water pushing up at the surface.  Fill the hole with coarse gravel or rocks. Cover the top of the gravel with a screen and seal it with cement.

  4. get a sump pump and put it in the hole!  that's the reason for the hole. it's intended to prevent your basement from flooding. you'll probably spend as much money sealing it with concrete as you would on a pump.  if you seal it the water will have no place to go when it floods again and it will flood again.

  5. Does your basement have an operating sump pump? If not, you may consider one. Filling in the old hole try gravel. It may also be an old water well (seen it before) so it may take a lot of gravel. If your basement has a concrete floor the I would cap off the hole with abour 4 inches of fast drying cement.
