My basement toilet smells. How can I fix it?

Every sewer line going to a toilet usually has a vent pipe to remove the smell from the sewer pipe. The vent pipes usually exhaust out of the roof of the house. Make sure the vent pipe is clear of any debris or blocked and clearly connected to the sewer pipe and there are no cracks or leaks. They usually put in the vent pipe because flushed water is smelly (black water), not gray water like shower or bathtub.

Any plumbing drain that sits unused for long periods of time can cause the trap (that U shaped pipe that is meant to keep sewer gas from backing up into the house) to dry out. Flushing all drains periodically will help.  I also get a bad odor from a hot water tank that does not get flushed regularly - it is a small one that only services one wash room.

That is a couple possibilities.

If it is the toilet itself, clean it thoroughly, then if it still smells change the wax ring under the toilet. The wax ring keeps sewer gasses from entering the bathroom. For step by step instructions go to this link: http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/bath/...

If it is the whole bathroom that smells run the shower or the bathtub and sink to fill up the trap with water. These can dry out allowing sewer gasses to enter the house.

pour bleach and soap in it , leave over night, wash in the morning.

If you mean the toilet itself, the seal is probably broken.  You'll have to have someone just replace the seal.
