He has alot of redness around his stomach, mouth, or anywhere the skins visible through the hair. He has little pink spots all over, his ears are swollen. He cannot control his tongue and cannot lap up water or pick up his food. This just developed over the last 3 days. Before this he was the happiest dog in the neighbourhood. He is 3.5 years old. We spent $700 for bloodwork, a throat inspection on anaesthetics, and nothing has turned up. He can swallow, he just can't get anything in his mouth by himself. He also has his right eye which is very red and has a mucusy snot which develops every few hours. Right now we have made a trip to the vet every day and he is on eyedrops and Benedryl for now until they establish something to test him for. Does anyone know of any way I can make him more comfortable or get better? He has a very droopy and dopey personality right now and doesn't want to do anything but sleep. He's usually active for 3 hours a day. Please help!

  1. The redness on his stomach and mouth, is that on white haired areas more than on coloured areas? If so --> photosensitisation, probably liver problem

Physically can't manipulate food with his jaw or tongue or both? --> cranial nerves or brain. Possibly hepatic encephalopathy

Depressed, tired, unresponsive? --> hepatic encephalopathy of brain tumour

You say there's bloodwork been done, it should not be normal. Has a biochemistry analysis been done too?

  2. I agree with what Samu-kun suggested, that you take your dog to a specialist. I would also recommend that you maybe try a few different vets to see if they can identify the problem. Another vet may be able to pick up the problem that this one can't seem to find. Has the vet done an ultrasound yet to see if their something not quite right inside the dogs body?

  3. this sounds like a rare illness.

if your vet doesn't know what it is, you need to take him to a better vet or a specialist.
