Question:

My bearded dragon has been basking on drift wood?

Just a two days my bearded dragon stopped using her basking rocks and started basking on the drift wood I had added just a week prior.

Is it bad if she basks on drift wood? I'm aware they don't absorb as much heat.

  1. The fact is a bearded dragon will bask where ever it wants.  The purpose of a large rock is not so dragon has a warm place to sit and bask.  This is for aiding the dragon in the digestion of its food.  It could like the drift wood, soley because it is new to his environment.    Also Bearded dragons like to let their feet hang sometimes when they are truly basking, maybe this drift would allows a more comfortable basking area.  I would not be concerned as long as your little friend still has his appetite.    You can personally touch the rock.  If it is to hot for you to touch with your bare hand then yes it is to hot.  It is also possible that the wood offers a more comfortable heat.

  2. Let me rephrase my wording if your using a heat lamp it is probably making the rock too hot. It could be burning the feet of the breadie or your breadie just prefer to lay on something softer than rock. My savannah basks on dirft wood also.

  3. Well, if you added it, then isn't it natural that they want to try it out and see which is better?

It;s not bad, if its nearer your heat source then its fine! S'long as she doesn't get burnt, but shes a herp, she can decide where she wants to sit for herself.
