Question:

My betta's bubble nest? Please help, what should I do? Need lots of answers!?

Ok, it is 12:00 midnight where I live and I have had my betta pair in the tank together the entire day. My female is in a small tank that I set in a 10gal breeding tank that is 5" deep. I have everything right, I am more than positive. Dark surroundings, 80 degrees, no gravel, no decorations.

My problem is that my male betta has made about two bubble nests, both very small. I'm excited to see that he finally got around to it, but he never finishes the nest because he swims over to my female to gain her approval, trying to coax her over to the bubble nest. Though it isn't completed, should I let my female out so that he can show her the nest and hopefully have her reject it for now. I am hoping that this technique will work to make him focus on the nest and make it bigger. I am confused on what to do. Can betta breeders please help!? Should I follow through with my plan? Is there anything else I should do?

So the main question is I suppose....What can I do to get my male (Sundance) motivated to continue is nest.

Thank you so much. All answers are important and I really need them!!

  1. Wow congrats to you, sound s like shes ready, get yourself on fightingfishforum. Speak to Celeste and the guys there they are full of info.

  2. You should keep the female out of the tank till he builds the nest.  He is too distracted by her being in the tank.  If that does not help I am sorry to say that I think maybe your fish is too old.  YES Bettas can be too old to breed.

let him build the nest on his own then add her back in the separate cup.

Also has he ever build a good nest before?  I have a small young male that is healthy and happy but has no desire to build a nest.  Some just don't feel the need to.

  3. It needs a heater.

Without heat, the eggs won't hatch enough. And if the water is cold, the eggs won't even hatch. Eggs normally hatch around 24 hours WITH A HEATER, and more fry will die due to lack of a heater.

Keep in mind every male fry would need his OWN aquarium with a heater and filter. The females can stay in the same tank.

As for your question, is your male mature? Are you feeding them high protein food such as blood worms to get them into the mood?
