  1. Lots of bettas hide behind plants, especially if he's new. Most bettas hate flakes, the only ones that will eat them are the ones that are raised on them. Is the flake food even made for bettas? Even though bettas are tropical fish (tropical fish food is made for omnivores), do not feed them tropical fish flakes, it lacks essential nutrients that bettas need because they are carnivores (more specifically insectivores). Bettas prefer pellets like Betta Banquet Premium Betta Food by Seachem or Hikari Betta Bio-Gold, they are tiny little pellets, your betta will only need like 4-8 pellets a day (take a good look at your betta's eye, that's how big his stomach is), depending on the size of your betta, if he's new, he's probably quite small 4 pellets a day will be sufficient. As for treats (once or twice a week) my bettas love bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, baby crickets, fruit flys, daphnia, finely chopped beef-heart and blanched peas (for digestion).

    Hope this helps!
