  1. do hamsters go into heat?

  2. i think the girl hamster had her period.

  3. there are several possible reasons for this.

if your hamsters have been living together without a problem, then a fight is probrably not the most likely occurance.  however, since the hamsters are opposite s*x, this can complicate things a little bit.  if the female is pregnant, she may become moody before delivery and damage the male.  however, if you do not see any marks (scratches, cuts, etc.) on the male then it isnt as highly likely that this happened.

if they have not been getting along at all, a wise thing to do may be to seperate them.

another possibility is that the female was pregnant and delivered her litter, but the male cannibalized (ate) them.  this is a common thing in hamsters if the pups are born while the male is still in the cage.  the products of the afterbirth are blood and placentas (she eats placentas).  if the blood is on the bedding and not the bars of the cage, then this is a very good possibility.  (if the blood is on the bars or side of cage then it is probrably the result of a fight)

the cage may smell a little bit like something has died.  if that is so then there is probrably little  pieces of the birthing evidence still left in the bedding somewhere and the cage needs to be cleaned.  since hamsters go straight into heat right after birth, then your female is probrably pregnant again.  do not be surprised if this happens again, but i would go ahead and seperate them to allow the female a break so she can raise a proper litter.  it is not healthy for a hamster (or any animal) to become pregnant with one litter right after another and will shorten their life  span.

sometimes, if a hamster has a fight it doesnt always mean that they will not ever get along.  just because they had one dissagreement doesnt mean that you should seperate them for  good.  (you and other people dont always get along, and roommates do get annoying sometimes)  allow them to try and resolve a pecking order, but if the fighting becomes more serious, then you should consider either getting a bigger cage or seperating them.  most hamsters of opposite  s*x tend to get along very well though.  the problems come from housing two of the same s*x most of the time, ie male and male or female and female.

hamsters are not strictly solitary, as  most people tell you.  (breeding would be impossible if they were)  not all hamsters will get along together though.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Girls tend to have periods. Even hamsters.

  5. the girl hamster could be pregnant.

  6. maybe the hamster has its period.  The girl one!!!!

  7. Hamsters are solitary creatures and should not be kept in pairs. They will fight if you have two females, two males or one of each.

Even a male and female hamster can only be left together safely for a few minutes when the female is ready to mate.

Once they have mated they must be separated before the female attacks the male and seriously damages him.

If you want to keep them together, buy one of the modular plastic hamster homes and make two homes WITHOUT a connecting door so that they look  as if they are living together but can't get at each other.

  8. a little fight might have done the trick

  9. Maybe they don't get along and should be in separate cages for now.

  10. maybe they had their first fight~
