  1. Check for a tight link in the chain. Pedal slowly backwards, and observe the chain as it passes through the jockey pulleys at the derailleur. A tight link will be obvious. You can fix a tight link by twisting the chain or by prying at it with a screwdriver, but the best method is to use a chain rivet tool.

If your chain has one or more tight links because it's rusty, the damage is done and it should be replaced.

  2. Your chain has too much slack.  The first fix is to loosen the nuts that connect your rear wheel to the frame.  Slide the rear wheel back until there is no slack in the chain and re tighten the nuts.  Good luck.

  3. I wonder if the chain is jumping while you are just pedaling, or after a shift, and is it moving on the front chainwheels or on the rear sprockets?

The best article I've ever seen on adjusting derailleurs is from Sheldon Brown, and can be found here:

  4. just simply move the wheel back until there is no slack.

  5. This is kind of a difficult question to answer via an email There are various adjustments you can do to your gearing; the barrel adjustments on you handlebars where the cable goes into the shifters and the H/L screws on the actual derailleurs.

I listed a couple of websites that explain it with photos. Its really easy once you get a hang of it.

Basically, I think you just need to tune you gearing according to the websites. Your cables may need replacing depending on how old they are. I just did mine. Not too difficult.

If you plan on doing your own work, I would recomment buying a mtb maintenance book. Its nice to keep in the garage for reference.

  6. Is it a single speed or multi speed?   For a single speed to need to loosen the rear axle, move the wheel back and tighten. The center of the chain between the sprockets should move up or down 1/2 inch.

For a derailleur adjustments see the link.
