My bird during Hurricane Hanna??

Ohk, so Hurricane Hanna is heading straight for us. It should be here by the end of the week. Well, we might have to evacuate, but I'm not completely sure yet. What should I do with my bird?! If we have to evacuate, then we'll probably go to a hotel where they take animals, so we'd take our dog with us. Should we take our bird to the same place too? But the hotels are about an hour away and the bird would freak out during the traveling there. And would they bird be traumatized because of the move? Please help. I really don't want to leave my bird here but will it be ok to take him with us? He's about a year and a half old, male, cockatiel.

  1. Put a cover over his cage, so he is in the dark for traveling.  and sit the cage somewhere secure.   I have a friend who shows cockateils and travels regularly with his.  We have also moved house on a few occasions and taken our budgie.  We just kept a heavy dark cover over the cage, and they were fine.

As yet Hanna is still a tropical storm.  The track they have her on now looks like she may skirt up the coast of Florida before making land fall.  Even then she may not strengthen enough to become a hurricane.  This is a good site to help you track hurricanes in the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

Hope all goes well for you.

  2. Take the bird with you. I think a lot of places learned from Katrina -- if you DON'T allow people to take their pets, they won't leave them behind and will stay in the danger zone (at least not the really responsible ones won't abandon their pets). I would rather sleep in my car, with my birds, than stay in a hotel that won't let me bring their travel cages inside.

  4. Yes take your bird!!

For the ride, cover the cage with a blanket or towel, or get some type of box that you can keep him in where he can't see what is going on but safe.

It is going to be stressful for him, but you can do things like this to make it less stressful. Also, keep reasuring him that you are their and things will be fine.

  5. You should take him.

He is going to die any way if you leave him, and if you take him you have a chance he may get stressed ot, but not likely.

    Just take him.

If you really cannottake him, give him to someone who can, because he will be crushed of drowned by the hurricane.

    Please take him
