We got my budgie from my mum, he was in his cage all the time, we have had him 18mths and he has the choice to come out or not. He started sitting on our hands in the last week but only, he thinks we are a mate cause he tries to rub his bum on our hand, he also rides his toy in his cage.

But he is getting aggressive and he is biting hard, so i try to put him in his cage when hes like it to try and tell him that when he is like this hes not coming out. He loves company but

Its a bit disheartening as i thought we were getting somewhere with him.

shall i get him a mate?

please help me.

  1. If your holding him and he bites you shake your hand a little or turn it so he loses his balance slightly.  Birds hate to lose their balance. He'll start to associate biting with losing his balance and hopefully will stop biting.

  2. Your bird thinks that you are his mate.  A good idea is to put him in his cage and get a cage cover so that he gets "quiet time" for about 5-10 minutes.  Make sure he doesn't have too much daylight, as that represents spring and breeding time to him.  If he acts like you are his mate, teach him something, such as the "step up" command.  It is better for him to think of you as a teacher than a mate.

And if your bird is too aggressive, he won't make a good mate as he might harm his companion.

My budgie had the same problem.  Also if you hold him a certain way, it actually "turns him on" if you touch his vent or under the wings.
