Hi! I've had 2 budgies for about 2 years now, but weirdly my bird has been laying lots of eggs and when i look at her and talk to her she cramps her back up and the fur on her head goes up and she's a statue! I get to touch her on the wings feet anywhere and she doesn't even care. Every time she does that she lays for eggs! What do I do? Also, does laying eggs shorten the birds life? Like from 15 years to 5? Thanks so much!

P.S: How do you do "Best Answer"? I'm new so I don't know:(

  1. I have around 22 parakeets and all but 2 are from them having babies. Unfortunately, I do find that when one becomes an egg laying machine, it takes a toll on their body and will shorten their life span although I don't have an exact number of years on that one.

The two answers before mine I think should be kept in mind on how to deal with the situation.

As for the "statue" pose you are speaking of it sounds like what my females do when they are waiting to be mounted. You don't need to be alarmed.

    I hope this helps.

  2. sounds like she thinks your her partner is the other one also laying are they together? If they are not a breeding pair then this is whats going on, that's why she goes and lays another egg it your touch that's triggering her off, give her plenty of calcium while she laying, cuttle bone or calcium supplement from pet shop

  3. Your bird is stressed from laying to many eggs.  Be sure she has a cuttle bone to give her calcium or she can die from this.

If you put a nest in the cage, remove it.  Then cover the cage before dusk with a dark cloth.  Do not uncover it until mid morning.

Birds are triggered to lay eggs by 3 things: extended day light hours, abundant food and nesting material or nest.

You can control all of these.  It sounds like she is becoming egg bound and this can kill her.

Stress can shorten the life of a bird and she is very stressed.
