Question:

My bird keeps on cutting the cotton rope perch, NORMAL?

My 3 years old green chick conure is most of the time cutting the cotton rope perch in her cage. It sounds very harsh on her beak but I don't know if it is because she is bored or what? She had an accident 2 years ago in which her lower beak split in half. She had multiple surgeries and now after 2 years of constant care she has started to grow some healthy (which I am very happy about). Her upper beak is longer than usual to protect her lower beak (vet suggestion). She cut this ropes all day with her upper beak mostly which was trimmed twice last month as I was worried that it being too long is the cause of her act. Well... it didn't help. As I am typing she is cutting ropes...

Is it normal? Does your bird do that?

BTW, her mate (also green chick) doesn't do this at all.

  1. I know that it is normal for these types of birds to do this. Try getting her a wooden perch and another type of rope instead of cotton. The cotton is to easy to cut thru. Glad to hear thats she's doing well now. Thanks to your loving care. Also maybe the reason why she constantly cuts these is because of her new beak.

  2. Ummm I think it's a Green Cheek(ed) Conure?  The bird may be bored or she may be having a wonderful time.  Still, you don't want all those loose strings in the cage which could wrap around a toe, cutting off the circulation or impact her crop. and possibly kill her  Get rid of the rope perch and buy her some new , safe to chew toys, made for a bird her size.  Foster and Smith have some good ones.  Your local pet shop probably has some, too.

  3. I think it is normal my bird an African Grey loves to chew his cotton ropes . Cotton is soft and I don't think it will hurt their beaks. Just keep buying new ones for her. They are not too expensive.

  4. Yes, sounds normal.  My birds have several different types of perches in their cages, one prefers to chew the wooden ones. Some birds do like to chew things. If you don't mind buying new ones I think it's ok.  Just be careful of the fraying that they don't get their feet tangled in it.  That would be the only problem I would see. Or, maybe you are worried she may harm her beak by the chewing. Maybe if she enjoys chewing on cotton ropes, you could pick up some toys with cotton in it for her to destroy.  Birds as you see are all different, what one likes the other doesn't...  You're a good mom to your birds.  God Bless.

  5. buy some new toys CUTE

  6. I'm sorry your conure has beak problems. But don't worry, all parrots like to chew things; destroying stuff is fun for them. My male cockatiel even liked to chew his own cotton rope perch, he was always trying to rip it apart. Just make sure it doesn't get too many loose threads, as mentioned before, because her little toe nails could get snagged on them.
