I think it might be because he's snoring. We don't have a cat...don't know?!

  1. I have a Pionus and when I scratch her neck. She makes a sound that is like a purr.  It is a sign of contentment.

  2. Do you have a bird in the parrot family ?  perhaps he is hearing someone snore really loud in th house !

  3. Is it possible that there was a cat wherever he was before you got him, or that he might be imitating someone's snoring?  My cockatiel meows even though we don't have any cats in the house, so I believe the breeder I got him from had a cat.  Or if it's more of a sort of scratching sound with his beak, then that actually means the same thing as a cat's purring, that the bird is happy and comfortable, and also possibly getting ready for a nap.

  4. it might be their specie that do it

  5. All three of mine make a sound like that -- when they're playing and rolling around, they'll make this low "chrrrrrrrr" -- it sounds like they have a little motor going.

  6. if it is a purr like a cat, your bird should be relaxed and at ease, but if it is a purr like a guinea pig that is a warning sign. if he is angry then his feathers will be tighter and he will be more alert
